To obtain a full license to drive a motorcycle you must pass a practical test. The test consists of two parts that assess your skill level and competence when driving. The test must be completed and you must pass by satisfying the standards set out by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) to obtain your license.

To take the practical test you must first hold a valid certificate of the driving theory test, and you must take the practical test within 24 months of obtaining your certificate.

Motorycycle Training Tips to Complete the Practical Driving Test

It is advisable that you contact a qualified instructor to complete some additional training in advance of your practical test. Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) is helpful to improve your driving skill, however many people choose to take additional lessons to pass their test. A qualified instructor will be able to advise you on the specific requirements for taking the practical test.

CBT Courses and Training

In most circumstances, CBT courses are provided to two individuals at the same time. It is however possible to inquire about independent lessons if you feel it would be of benefit to you or if you are nervous about taking the test.

In order to start training, you should have the necessary safety clothing for a motorcycle. If you do not already have these, you can inquire with the course provider, some instruction centers have these available for lessons. The safety gear necessary includes a helmet, gloves, sturdy boots, and a weatherproof jacket.

CBT and Additional Training Costs

The cost for CBT courses can vary depending on the provider but the average price is between £99 and £130. On completion of your CBT training, you may also opt to take part in additional practical training. The cost for this is an additional £175 per day.

The cost of extra training covers both motorcycle hire and protective clothing as well as insurance and petrol costs.

DVSA Test Prices

The Module one test costs £15. If you require a larger motorcycle then you will need an instructor to take you and this increases the cost to £125.

Module two tests cost £75, you will be accompanied by an examiner for this test. As with the Module one test, there is an additional cost for a half-day if you require a large motorcycle.
